First Edition Printing History:

May 28, 1952 Scribner's orders 51,700 copies to be printed in August, 1952. All books are on laid paper. Scribner's Press imprint present on copyright page along with "A" to indicate the first printing. Title page states "1952" under "Charles Scribner's Sons, New York."

August 28, 1952 Scribner's orders 10,250 copies of the second printing to be printed in September, 1952. Paper is changed from laid to wove though some books are on laid (likely left over from first printing) "A" is dropped from the copyright page. Text on dust jacket flaps is changed from brown in color to black. 

September 18, 1952 Scribner's orders 15,400 additional copies printed in the same month for the third printing.

November 24, 1952 Scribner's orders 10,200 copies printed in the same month for the fourth printing.

*Additional notes: 87,550 copies in total were printed in 1952. There is no way to distinguish between second, third, and fourth printings. While some are on laid paper, it is not known exactly when paper was changed to wove.

Ernest Hemingway learns of Pulitzer Prize on May 4, 1953. On May 5, 1953 Scribner's orders 5,175 copies to be printed in the same month for the fifth printing. 

June 24, 1953 Scribner's orders 4,400 copies to be printed the same month for the sixth printing.

October 14, 1953 Scribner's orders 5,025 copies to be printed the same month for the seventh printing.

*Additional notes: 14,600 copies in total were printed in 1953. Title page states "1953" under "Charles Scribner's Sons, New York." 

March 2, 1954 Scribner's order 6,500 copies to be printed in the same month for the eighth printing.

October 28, 1954 Novel Prize awarded to Ernest Hemingway. On November 1, 1954 Scribner's orders 10,000 copies to be printed in the same month for the ninth printing.

December 7, 1954 Scribner's orders 5,000 copies to be printed in the same month for the 10th printing.

Additional notes: 21,500 copies in total were printed in 1954. Total copies of first through tenth printing were 123,650. Date under "Charles Scribner's Sons, New York" removed for all 1954 printings. There is no way to distinguish between the eighth and tenth printing books without the dust jacket. Eighth printing books carry the original Lee Samuels rear panel photo of Hemingway. The ninth printing has "11-54" printed on bottom right of page 140 and the dust jacket changed to the "Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature" rear panel. Tenth printing copies have this new dust jacket. 

January 11, 1955 Scribner's orders 10,000 copies to be printed in the same month for the 11th printing. "1955" added back under "Charles Scribner's Sons, New York" on title page. 

Early September, 1955. Scribner's orders and prints an unknown amount of 12th printing copies. "9-55" is printed on the bottom right corner of page 140. These are the last copies printed at the Scribner's Press. 

Scribner Press closes mid 1955. New Press uses coded system on copyright page. 

July, 1956 "M-7.56 [H]" stated on copyright page for the 13th printing. This is the first printing typeset. 

April, 1957 "N-4.57 [H]" stated on copyright page for the 14th printing.

February, 1958 "O-2.58 [H]" stated on copyright page for the 15th printing.

July, 1958 "P-7.58 [H]" stated on copyright page for the 16th printing.

August, 1959 "Q-8.59 [H]" stated on copyright page for the 17th printing. This is the first printing typeset.

March, 1960 "R-3.60 [H]" stated on copyright page for the 18th printing.
