Bruccoli once wrote, "I met Scottie on 9 October 1964, at an auction for the benefit of the Baltimore Symphony. She had donated two books I wanted: a copy of Death in the Afternoon inscribed by Hemingway to Fitzgerald and a Gatsby inscribed by Fitzgerald to his mother. By trying to get both, I got neither. There was a third book-not donated by Scottie-an inscribed Taps of Reveille that I tried to buy so as to not leave empty handed. As the bidding rose to $250 I discovered that I was bidding against Scottie-to whom I had introduced myself earlier in the evening-and I dropped out. She took it at $275, wrote a gracious note in the book, and gave it to me. She later explained that she was troubled because I had missed out on the other books. That response defined Scottie. I fell in devotion to her; for the rest of her life she encouraged and inspired my Fitzgerald work. We collaborated on eight "Daddy books," four of which give her title-page credit. At some point around 1970 my Fitzgerald collection became a celebration of Scottie. She gave me Daddy items at Christmas. After her death I received a box of Fitzgerald books she had selected during her last days and arranged to be sent to cheer me up after she died. The best thing I got out of F. Scott Fitzgerald was Scottie Fitzgerald." Item #310605
